Grandma Block's Sour Cream Cake

Sour Cream Cake
(marked with a Very Good)
PS  Please take the time to sift your flour twice with a sifter, as Gma did, otherwise the cake will turn out heavy.

two eggs, beaten
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup sour cream (this is fresh, whole "farm" cream that has gone sour, not the sour cream in the supermarket)
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp soda in cream
1 tsp cinnamon
flour for ordinary cake batter, 1 3/4 to 2 1/4 cups, start with less and add more, depending upon humidity
This batch makes 2 layers and is good with brown sugar frosting

As written by my Great Grandmother Margarethe 'Maggie' Block.

Brown Sugar Frosting

  • 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon white corn syrup

  • 2 tablespoons water

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Cook the ingredients except powdered sugar in a heavy cast iron skill until smooth.  Take off the heat and beat in the sugar.  Spoon over your cake.  Frosting hardens when it cools.

  1. Your mother's recipe looks yummy. Do I need to buy fresh cream and let it sit in the frig for a week or two until it smells a bit off? or can I add a bit of vinegar? I've cooked for about 45 years, but haven't cooked with soured cream.
Thank you for sharing your family recipe.

  2. Dear Sheila,

I asked my mother about this and she said that her grandmother lived on a farm with cows, so she used cream that soured naturally. She used non-pastuerized cream, which, according to my Mom, made the cake absolutely delicious. My mother requests that if you make the cake, can you please post a picture online, as this will bring back fond memories. Thank you!

  3. PS Sheila,
Mom says that vinegar will sour the cream faster.

  5. I have my mother's recipe box that also contains her mother's recipe cards... and I love the hand written recipes AND the comments. I also love the ingredient lists with items such as "a 10 cent box of marshmallows"... *lol* I suppose it's a good thing I remember 10-cent boxes of marshmallows!

I think it's a wonderful idea to share your family's recipes... am looking forward to following along!

  7. Love these old recipes. You had to be a really good (experienced) cook to get good results with some of their vague instructions. Love the "very good". My mom had a funny code - she would write NG for not good. Didn't want to actually write something bad, in case the author happened to see that note some day! Looking forward to more recipes~

  8. I've heard of sour cream in cake before, sounds like a great recipe. Thanks for linking up! This is gonna be a fun week, seeing what "secret ingredient" people hide in their recipes!

Just a "sneak peak" for next week, the theme is "HUBBY COOKS". So, we hope to see you again next Monday (and maybe if you don't already have a husband that cooks, you can talk him into making you dinner this week... that's what I have to do!)

Enjoying your blog. I also bake with sour cream and home-made yogurt. Makes breads, cakes and cookies lighter.
